Watch as birds solve puzzles and challenge our basic notions of intelligence. (Premiered December 20, 2017) Official website: https://to.pbs.org/41xdmJy #novapbs Call somebody a “bird brain,” and you’re not delivering them a compliment. But as NOVA shows, birds turn out to have advanced problem-solving skills that we usually assume are unique to humans. Watch astonishing tests of avian aptitude: parrots that can plan for the future, jackdaws that can “read” human faces, and crows that can solve multi-step puzzles with tools like pebbles, sticks, and hooks. Could these just be clever tricks based on instinct or triggered by subtle cues from their human handlers? To rule out any doubts, NOVA puts feathered Einsteins through their paces and reveals skills that even three- or four-year-old children have a hard time mastering—such as putting off one reward now to get a bigger one later. From this revolution in thinking about our feathered friends, the conclusion seems irresistible that bird brains see the world in ways that aren’t so different from our own. Strike on Iran: The Nuclear Question (full documentary) | FRONTLINE
An immersive investigation into the impact of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear program uses rare on-the-ground access in Iran and in-depth forensic analysis. This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate Over the course of 12 days in June 2025, Israel bombed targets related to Iran’s nuclear program and assassinated scientists, Iran launched retaliatory airstrikes on Israel, and the U.S. carried out airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities. What was the impact of this unprecedented Israel-U.S. bombing campaign on Iran’s nuclear program? “Strike on Iran: The Nuclear Question” offers some of the most in-depth accounts of the destruction from inside Iran since the war. Those accounts were gathered during a tightly controlled but expansive visit to the country that included visits to the sites where Iranian scientists were assassinated, conversations with witnesses and family members of those killed, and interviews with regime officials. The result is one of the most comprehensive and detailed views yet of how Iran’s top nuclear scientists were assassinated, and how Iran’s protected underground nuclear sites were penetrated by powerful U.S. bombs. “Strike on Iran” is a FRONTLINE production with Mongoose Pictures in association with The @WashingtonPost @evidentmedia and @bellingcatofficial It is written, produced and directed by Adam Desiderio and Sebastian Walker. Status: Venezuelan | They Came to the U.S. Legally. Then Trump Stripped Their Status Away.
[Para activar los subtítulos en español, haga clic en el botón “CC” en la parte inferior del reproductor de video. Luego seleccione “Configuración” y cambie el idioma a español. Encuentra el título y la descripción del documental debajo del texto en inglés.] Amid Trump’s immigration crackdown, a Venezuelan family struggles to keep its legal status in “Status: Venezuela,” a new documentary from ProPublica and FRONTLINE FEATURES. For about a decade, Venezuelans have faced economic, political and social collapse. Yineska and her family fled to the U.S., arriving in 2023 with temporary legal status and hopes for a better life. But on the day President Donald Trump returned to office, he began stripping protections away. This film is set in and around Doral, Florida, home to the largest Venezuelan diaspora in the U.S. Many residents were staunch Trump supporters because of his hard-line stance against Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s authoritarian president. But in 2025, Venezuelans became a key target of Trump’s mass deportation campaign. His administration says it’s focusing on “the worst of the worst.” Most of those caught up in the dragnet do not have any criminal convictions in the U.S. On the front lines of the crackdown are hundreds of thousands Venezuelan families like Yineska’s who arrived between Trump’s terms in office. “Status: Venezuelan” follows Yineska and her family as they weigh fear against hope, struggling to decide whether to fight for the life they have built or leave everything behind. “Status: Venezuelan” is a ProPublica production for FRONTLINE FEATURES. The director is Mauricio Rodríguez Pons. The senior producer is Frank Koughan. Almudena Toral is ProPublica’s executive producer and ProPublica’s editor-in-chief is Stephen Engelberg. The editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE is Raney Aronson-Rath. Inside the Politics of America’s Gun Debate | Gunned Down (full documentary) | FRONTLINE
In 2015’s “Gunned Down: The Power of the NRA,” FRONTLINE examined the National Rifle Association’s political evolution and influence, and how it had consistently succeeded in defeating gun control legislation. (Aired 2015) This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate Drawing on interviews with leading voices on both sides of the gun regulation debate, “Gunned Down” went inside one of the country’s greatest divides to illuminate how the NRA reinvented itself from a group of gun enthusiasts and sportsmen with minimal political focus, to a powerful lobbying force opposing any perceived infringement of the constitutional right to bear arms. The documentary traced the emergence of Wayne LaPierre, then one of the NRA’s top leaders, and explores how he activated the group’s influential base in the wake of mass shootings. The film featured interviews with Congressional leaders, former White House officials, then-Vice President Joe Biden, and gun-rights and gun-reform advocates. It also featured firsthand accounts from family members of mass shooting victims, including the deadly 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. For more on the evolution of the NRA and America’s gun debate, watch FRONTLINE’s 2020 documentary “NRA Under Fire,” which investigated the organization’s history and evolution, how it aligned with President Donald Trump and his base, and why it was under attack ahead of the 2020 election. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/nra-under-fire/ “Gunned Down” is a FRONTLINE production with the Kirk Documentary Group. Weaving together original footage, intensive Ukrainian Army bodycam video and powerful moments of reflection with haunting intimacy, the documentary reveals how the farther the soldiers advance through their destroyed homeland, the more they realize that, for them, this war may never end. “2000 Meters to Andriivka” is written, filmed and directed by filmmaker and Associated Press journalist Mstyslav Chernov. How an Execution in Texas Sparked a National Debate | Death by Fire (full documentary) | FRONTLINE
Did Texas execute an innocent man? This 2010 documentary investigates the controversial death penalty case of Cameron Todd Willingham — and the scientific validity of the arson evidence used to convict him of the deaths of his three children. This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate The execution of Cameron Todd Willingham in Texas in 2004 became the center of a national debate about the death penalty and the science behind arson investigations. Drawing on unique access to those closest to the Willingham case, “Death by Fire” meticulously examines the evidence used to convict Willingham, and explores the implications of the execution of a possibly innocent man. Through interviews with Willingham’s friends and family, the documentary tells the story of a troubled young man with a history of domestic violence who quickly became the prime suspect in his children’s deaths. The discovery by fire investigators of more than 20 indicators of arson at the scene of the fire pointed directly to Willingham’s guilt. But the re-examination of the case turned on a critical finding that came only weeks before Willingham’s scheduled execution: The investigators who determined that he had set the fire that killed his three daughters had relied on an outdated understanding of arson evidence. Experts told FRONTLINE there could be hundreds of innocent people in prison for arson cases where the evidence was misinterpreted by investigators. “Death by Fire” is a FRONTLINE production with Kirk Documentary Group in association with StartBox Films. The producer and director is Jessie Deeter. The writers are Mike Wiser and Michael Kirk. The co-producer is Mike Wiser and the senior producer is Michael Kirk. Drug War in Ecuador (full documentary) | FRONTLINE
An on-the-ground look at how Ecuador, a once-peaceful nation, is now gripped by drug cartels, violence and a military crackdown. With rare access to gang recruits, police, politicians and families caught in the crossfire, this documentary explores efforts to stem the violence and the human toll. This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate Once one of Latin America’s most peaceful nations, Ecuador has now become one of its most violent. Foreign cartels have joined with local gangs to control the drug trade, funneling cocaine to the U.S. and Europe, and pushing the homicide rate in the country to record levels. In response, Ecuador’s government declared a state of emergency in 2024, and sent the military onto the streets and into gang-plagued prisons to crack down. “Drug War in Ecuador” illuminates the stark human toll of it all, drawing on deep access to those involved in the struggle, from the military and police to the gangs to the families caught in the crossfire. The film focuses on the stories of three people: Father Jose Antonio Maeso, a well-known gang violence mediator who also collects evidence of alleged abuses by the police and military; Colonel Javier Buitron, then governor in Esmeraldas, a hotbed of gang violence, who defends the government’s crackdown; and Ronny Medina, a grieving father who’s seeking justice for his 11-year-old son, Steven, one of four boys who were found dead after the military detained them. Ecuador’s military said the soldiers released the boys alive and gang members later killed them. Raw and profound, the documentary offers a powerful look at the ongoing crisis in the country. “Drug War in Ecuador” is a Duskwater Films production for GBH/FRONTLINE and ITV in association with The Big Story Films. Filmed and directed by Marcel Mettelsiefen. The producers are Stephen Ellis, Marcel Mettelsiefen, Mayte Carrasco and Ahisha Ghafoor. The associate producer is Esme Ramlal. How Dick Cheney Worked to Expand Executive Power | Cheney’s Law (full documentary) | FRONTLINE
Following former Vice President Dick Cheney’s death at age 84, watch this 2007 documentary tracing the behind-closed-doors battle Cheney waged within the George W. Bush administration over the power of the presidency and the rule of law. This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate For three decades, Dick Cheney had been an advocate of granting the president virtually unlimited wartime power. In the aftermath of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, with Cheney as George W. Bush’s vice president, the Justice Department and the White House made a number of controversial legal decisions. Orchestrated by Cheney and his lawyer David Addington, the department interpreted executive power in an expansive and extraordinary way, granting Bush the power to detain, interrogate, torture, wiretap and spy — without congressional approval or judicial review. In “Cheney’s Law,” a documentary by Michael Kirk and his team, FRONTLINE examined the battle over the power of the presidency and Cheney’s way of looking at the Constitution. As the White House and Congress faced off over executive privilege, the terrorist surveillance program, and the firing of U.S. attorneys, FRONTLINE told the story of what formed Cheney’s perspectives and what some at the time viewed as the most ambitious project to reshape the power of the president in American history. “Cheney’s Law” is a FRONTLINE co-production with Kirk Documentary Group Ltd. It is written, produced and directed by Michael Kirk. It is produced and reported by Jim Gilmore. The Rise of Germany's New Right (full documentary) | FRONTLINE
Far-right leaders in Germany have risen to the brink of power. This documentary investigates how they got there, looking at the reasons behind the surge in support for their brand of hardline nationalist politics and the roles of Russia and the U.S. This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate Support for nationalist, anti-immigrant parties has surged across Europe in recent years — including in Germany, where far-right leaders have risen to the brink of power for the first time since World War II. “The Rise of Germany’s New Right” examines the recent political ascendance of the country’s far-right Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) party — exploring how it has targeted younger voters using AI videos that play on fears about immigrants and crime, how it has called for the “remigration” of immigrants who entered Germany illegally and others who had been given temporary right to stay, and how it has won vocal support from influential figures including Elon Musk and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. The documentary also probes allegations that Russia boosted the AfD through what one journalist calls “disinformation warfare.” As the film details, after World War II, Germany set out to reckon with its grim history, in part by banning Nazi symbols and slogans and criminalizing Holocaust denial. A political “firewall” was also established, with mainstream parties vowing not to work with far-right parties to govern. The documentary details how, decades later, members of the AfD have pushed back against this “remembrance culture,” become the second largest party in Germany’s parliament, and are calling for the dismantling of the “firewall,” arguing it has no place in a democracy. Drawing on interviews with numerous AfD politicians, German intelligence service officials, political scientists, and journalists, “The Rise of Germany’s New Right” examines how and why the country reached this moment, and what it says about broader trends across Europe. “The Rise of Germany’s New Right” is a FRONTLINE production with Mongoose Pictures in association with Evan Williams Productions. The correspondent, reporter, producer and director is Evan Williams. The producer is Hannah Congdon. The senior producer is Dan Edge. The editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE is Raney Aronson-Rath.
